On April 15th, be apart of the Kosciusko County TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party

On April 15, be part of the Taxed Enough Already (TEA) party rally in Kosciusko County.

Are you fed up with a Congress and a president who:

  • vote for a $500 billion tax bill without even reading it?
  • are spending trillions of borrowed dollars, leaving a debt our great-grandchildren will be paying?
  • consistently give special interest groups billions of dollars in earmarks to help get themselves re-elected?
  • want to take your wealth and redistribute it to others?
  • punish those who practice responsible financial behavior and reward those who do not?
admit to using the financial hurt of millions as an opportunity to push their political agenda?
  • run up trillions of dollars of debt and then sell that debt to countries such as China?
    want government controlled health care?
  • want to take away the right to vote with a secret ballot in union elections?
  • refuse to stop the flow of millions of illegal immigrants into our country?
appoint a defender of child pornography to the Number 2 position in the Justice Department?
  • want to force doctors and other medical workers to perform abortions against their will?
  • want to impose a carbon tax on your electricity, gas and home heating fuels?
  • want to reduce your tax deductibility for charitable gifts?
  • take money from your family budget to pay for their federal budget?

If so, participate in the TAX Day TEA party rally, the Taxed Enough Already (TEA) party.

April 15th, 2009,

5 pm- 7 pm on the Kosciusko County Courthouse South lawn.

Bring your cell phone and call Congress and the president while attending the TAX Day TEA party rally (Representative and Senators, 202-224-3121; President, 202-456-1414). 1. Thanks for taking a stand and letting our government leaders know we are sick and tired of their outrageous spending and just won't take it anymore!

  2. Lynne1012,

What do you mean by "just won't take it anymore"? What exactly would you DO, if the government continues to ignore you?

Most people just make a little noise and complain about things. When it comes right down to it, though, nobody is really going to do anything except yell and protest. People in this area (Kos. County), for example, won't even have discussions with others of differing viewpoints.

The result of this thinking is that you have a bunch of people who just want to congregate on the Courthouse lawn (only with others who agree with them) and shout about how mad they are that their comfy suburban lifestyle feels threatened.

I don't like a lot of things this country is doing, and I think there are serious reasons to be concerned about the size and scope of government. But these Tea Parties just seem like a joke to me. 1) It gives people the illusion that they are actually making a difference--"my voice is being heard!" and 2) It makes people content that they have done something when they actually haven't and 3) It keeps people with differences from having real discussions with each other.

  3. Jonathon, you've got the Tea Parties all wrong. The 9-11 project is about learning what our civic duty is and becoming active locally. If you have a better idea, please share it. So far, your just a naysayer.

  4. But Mr. Nichols. As I understand it, the problem that Tea Party folks have is with the federal government. How, may I ask, is "becoming active locally" going to shape federal policy? And how does showing up at the courthouse to yell and shout change anything at the federal level?

I remain a naysayer, skeptical that the kinds of people who show up at Tea Parties will ever actually DO anything to make a difference.

  5. Jonathan, I wonder how Thoreau, Gandhi, MLK, or Rosa Parks would respond to you.

  6. I would love to hear what these people would say. It would be fantastic.

They embodied everything that the Tea Parties are missing: depth and real action. Gandhi, for example, was passionately non-violent, it was his deep conviction. Yet even he said that he would rather see someone act violently because they cared than to do nothing. Tea Party folks just talk a lot, do very little real thinking (that engages other perspectives), and then do nothing. Then they think that because they go to Tea Parties that they have "made their voice heard." Gandhi, MLK, etc. made their voice heard because they were thoughtful, philosophical, and actually acted on their convictions to force change.

The other thing that Gandhi/MLK/etc. had that so many folks around here are missing is that they didn't have anything to lose. They were ready to lay down their lives for change. People in this area just want to be comfortable. The "rage" (so-called) comes from having their cozy suburbian lifestyle upset.
